Kinnear and J. Johnsen said it was pleasing to see more entries this year. They all looked fresh and nicely set out. Biscuits sections were very good and the tray of fancy biscuits was outstandingóthe biscuits were well cooked, dainty and very artistic. [31/3/1954 7ac.] GUMERACHA SHOW - APPLES FEATURE Gumeracha Society claims the biggest fruit display in the State rivalling even the Adelaide Royal and on Saturday the section certainly was outstanding. Entries totalled 247, second highest to the record. Fifty of these were lodged by one exhibitor, H.E. Verrall & Son of Paracombe. For his trouble he gained the Stewards Challenge Cup, Balhannah Nursery Cup and the E.E. and D.A. Stephenson trophy together with 12 first, 7 second, and 4 third prizes. Trade displays were again much larger than in previous years and this trend has been noticeable at all shows this year. Sideshows were up to par and provide amusing diversions for the crowd. Horses in action entries received a boost and were fifty more than last year which ensured a full programme for the afternoon. The interesting Olympic Jump was won by a twelve years old girl rider. A new trophy for Hunter classes has been donated by Mr R.V. Hanna. Gumeracha CWA ladies were responsible for the catering and entire proceeds of the luncheon were handed to them by the Society for the purpose of assisting the Building Fund. Mrs C. Harvey was in charge of the floral decorations on the luncheon tables and Mrs Vic Sandercock was the convener of the luncheon. [31/3/1954 8ab.] K.V. LADIES FAREWELLED. On Wednesday the Kay-Vee Ladies held a meeting at the home of Mr and Mrs C. Sandercock Kenton Valley. Quite a number of ladies were present and took the opportunity to say goodbye to Mesdames V.A. and R.M. Clark, who are leaving shortly to reside near Strathalbyn. The President, Mrs Rex Sandercock, spoke on behalf of the Kay-Vee Welfare Club, of which both ladies are members. Mrs V.A. Lee on behalf of the Church and Mrs A.W. Lee the Sunday School. Mrs Vic. Sandercock also spoke on behalf of neighbours, wishing them success in their new sphere of life. Mrs V.A. Clark suitably responded and by special request sang a solo. [2/6/1954 5a.] AUSPICIOUS OCCASION FOR GUMERACHA CWA. Gumeracha CWA celebrated two special occasions. The 16th Birthday and the official opening of their Rest Room by the National and State President, Mrs Hunt. Perfect weather prevailed for the occasion and 250 ladies were present. The President, Mrs V. Lee welcomed the Honorary Guests, Mrs Hunt, Mrs Roeger, Group President, Mrs Forbes, Division President, Mrs C.P. Harvey. Vive-President moved a vote of thanks and presented Mrs Hunt with a box of glazed fruit. Mrs Hunt then planted a Japanese maple in front of the new Rest Room. During the afternoon many visitors from other branches gave greetings. Lady Hudd also gave a greeting from her Branch and spoke very well on her various experiences. Mrs Roeger complimented the Gumeracha CWA on their fine achievement in the building of the Rest Room. A table of polished wood was presented in memory of Mrs J.J. Stephenson, a late member of the Committee of the CWA, also a beautiful electric clock, in memory of the late Mrs J. Porter, who was a foundation member. These two elderly ladies were of great value to the branch and are greatly missed. The Mothers' and Babies' Health Association Committee presented a stainless steel sink and cabinet, also a Warm-ray Heater. The interior is painted eau-de-nil green, with off-white cupboards and chairs, red curtains and off-white Venetian blinds. The room itself is built of concrete bricks. The exterior is painted in a pleasing shade of deep cream. Beautiful flowers were tastefully placed in the room. A trading table organised by Mrs Farley and helpers realised £70. Afternoon tea was served by members of the Committee. Candles on the beautiful birthday cake, made by Mrs Vic. Sandercock and iced by Mrs A.L. Nickels were lit by Mrs Hunt fanned out by Mrs Bernice Cornish (Gumeracha Branch's first Treasurer) and the cake was cut by Mrs Forbes. [24/11/1954 11c.] SUDDEN DEATH OF GUMERACHA LADY. On Monday, January 17, the sudden death of Mrs Victor Sandercock of Kenton Valley, was a shock to her relatives and friends. On the previous day Mrs Sandercock celebrated her 61st birthday when her family and some friends spent a happy day together. In the evening her brothers of Launceston spoke to her by telephone. After an exciting day she collapsed and was taken to hospital the same evening. Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved family in the loss of a good wife and a good mother. Mrs Sandercock was of a friendly disposition and had a wide circle of friends. She was an ardent worker and a good giver to the many organisations in which she took an active part. A large gathering assembled at the graveside at North Gumeracha. [26/1/1955 6c.] STATE PRESIDENT ATTENDS GUMERACHA 21ST BIRTHDAY. State and Group officers, foundation members, together with representatives from most of the branches of the original Torrens Group accepted the invitation of the Gumeracha Branch of the CWA to attend the delightfully arranged luncheon held on June 24 in the local Institute. This made a pleasing background for gay bowls of poinsettia and berried foliage. After being received by the president, Mrs Phillips, and secretary, Mrs Clutterbuck, in the foyer, a happy time of greeting and reunion was spent before approximately 100 ladies seated themselves at the lavishly set tables. Mrs Clutterbuck was toastmistress. Among those present were State President, Mrs T.A. Hunt-Cooke; Deputy State Secretary, Mrs D. Burton, State Treasurer, Miss Blinman; St Vincent Group President, Mrs T. Stott and her secretary, Mrs Smith; and handicraft secretary, Mrs Ronchetti; Mrs Rice, President Torrens Group and her secretary, Mrs Elliot; and Mrs Glen Hawkes. In welcoming the visitors, Mrs Phillips extended a special greeting to the foundation members and said that without them there could have been no birthday celebrations. Mrs Blinman proposed "Our Association." Mrs Hunt-Cooke, in responding, spoke of the need of educational training for our young people, to meet a changing world. Mrs Burton proposed "Foundation Members" and recalled some of the amusing happenings as recorded in early reports. Mrs Robinson, foundation president, responded. The toast "Our Branch" was proposed by Mrs Stott, St Vincent Group President, and Mrs C.P. Harvey, branch vice-president responded. Twenty-eight foundation members responded to the roll call. "Looking back over 21 years" was presented by Mrs J. Grosvenor. The history had been prepared by Miss B. Cornish, foundation treasurer, and Mrs A.M. Cornish, foundation handicraft secretary. It was stated that over £2,500 had been raised by the branch for the local hospital. A gift of a piano stool was made in memory of the late Mrs V. Sandercock, who was a foundation member and had held office as president for six years. her daughter, Mrs Loechel, of Birdwood CWA, made the presentation. The three-tiered cake, which was made by Mrs L. Norsworthy, was beautifully iced by Mrs Dallow. Mrs Quinn, Mrs H. Norsworthy, foundation secretary, and Mrs Hunt-Cooke performed the cake ceremony. Soup, mornays, and hot savouries were served by the ladies of the Hall Auxiliary. The combined singing of the "Song of Peace" brought a very happy and memorable day to a close. [8/7/1959 7bc.] GUMERACHA JOTTINGS. Mr and Mrs R. Sandercock, Mr and Mrs S. Sinkinson and Mr Victor Sandercock enjoyed a motoring trip at Renmark. [20/7/1955 11e.] Children: 1. Arthur John SandercockBorn 13 Mar 1922 Died 22 Jan 1957, 34 years GUMERACHA PERSONAL. Dr and Mrs P.F. Stratmann are on a short holiday. Dr Seager is relieving. Mr and Mrs W. Sparrow former residents of Gumeracha, returned for a few weeks stay with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Jim Coad. Mr and Mrs Peter Parsons and family from the Peninsula (Mrs Parsons was formerly Yvonne Coad) are staying with Mr and Mrs W. Coad. Mr Harry Miels and family are enjoying their annual vacation at Port Elliot. Mr and Mrs Max Assender and family have motored across to Western Australia for a three weeks holiday, leaving Mrs Angus Lee and Mr Arthur Sandercock in charge of the bakery business. They are expected home this week. Mrs Dick Dunn and family are guests of Mrs Smith, of Mount Barker. Mrs V.A. Clark and family are spending a week with Mr and Mrs Traeger at Tanunda. Mrs D. Amber, senior, has her mother staying with her. Grandma is 90 years of age. Mr and Mrs M. Guthrie and family have arrived home from a three week stay at the Grange. [3/2/1954 3d.] GUMERACHA FOOTBALL CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual general meeting was held at Gumeracha Institute Hall on Monday. Mr Chambers presided with Mr A. Bleeze secretary and 29 members were present. The balance-sheet was adopted and showed the Club to be in a very nice financial position. Officers elected for season 1955 were:ñ President, Rev. M. Chambers; Patron, Dr R.R. Bowey; Secretary, A. Bleeze; Delegates to Association, Rev. Chambers and Mr R.G. Almond; Proxy Delegates, K. Colbey and J. Norsworthy; Timekeeper, B. May; Gatekeepers, R. Almond, K. Colbey, H. Randell; Auditor, H. Summerton; Social Secretary, W.B. Moore; Ball Steward, K. Bleeze. Mr H. Symonds was elected Captain with K. Hanna as his deputy for "A" grade, Mr H. Saunders and H. Summerton were elected captain and vice respectively of "B" grade. Mr F.H. Dohnt was elected head trainer with A. Sandercock and L. Green assistants. A motion was carried to the effect that Dr P.F. Stratmann, the Club's previous Patron, who has left the district, be forwarded a letter of thanks for his assistance in the past. Club delegates were instructed to again vote at the Association meeting for S.A. National Football Association umpires and past season admission prices of 1/d and 6d. for cars, remain unaltered this season. It was decided to accept Tailem Bend Football Club's offer of a trial match to be played at Gumeracha on 23rd April. The secretary was instructed to make inquiries regarding a trip at the end of the season. A dance was held in the Gumeracha Institute on Friday night in aid of the Club. [16/3/1955 11c.] | |||
