Don Sandercock brought up a hat-trick of Suncorp Mixed Fours titles with success in yesterdayís Winter Carnival final at Maroochydore Beach, to add to 1992/93 crowns.
Sandercock, his sister Claire Paterson from Toowoomba, Dell Sandercock and Lou Breen, (Bribie Island) hit their
straps in the final racing to a 11-1 lead after just six ends.
A lapse in concentration allowed the Kingaroy challengers Gordon Schultz, Menice Murray, Doris and Henry Newton to get back into the game at 11-9 but then the Sandercock team work clicked again.
On the fourteenth end Sandercock drew two shots for 20-9 lead then lead Dell Sandercock drew an opening toucher on the next end. Doris Newton replied with a magnificent bowl but Breen chipped in with a deft trail of the Jack for two.
The following end saw Newton, who had a wonderful tournament, Drew another toucher but this time Paterson was in the act drawing through the toucher. At three down Schutlz played a run-sit shot for a single and the Kingaroy group won the next two ends to be 22-12 down.
The next two ends went to the Suncorp champions as they picked up two threes to close the match at 28-12.
The event proved a lucky break for Lou Breen who was a replacement for the replacement. Originally Stan Coomber was called in to replace last yearís team member Bob Peachey but Coomber underwent recent surgery so Breen was brought into the team with obvious success.
Sandercock had a close 18-17 struggle against Stawellís Bill Holmes with never more than three shots separating the teams. Holmes and his wife Laurel Holmes and the Port Macquarie duo of Mavis and Phil Travers held a 9-6 lead after nine ends before Sandercock grabbed 3-2 to lead 11-9 but Holmes came back with a four, and the teams traded end for end to the penultimate end where the scores were level 17-17.
Other last end Breen drew two bowls to the jack to give Sandercock three shots - Holmes cut the score back to one but could not move the last bowl in what was a real championship match.
Todayís play see the attention swing to the opening rounds of the Suncorp Mixed pairs with last yearís winners Norma Massey and John Wolfinden rolling off at Mooloolaba. Ray and Helen Manning, the 1984 title winners are also at Mooloolaba, as is Joe Brunato who is paired with Iole Brunato.
Play begins at 9am at all Sunshine Coast clubs.

Don Sandercock successfully defended his Suncorp Mixed Fours title but only after surviving two extra ends in both the semifinal and final of yesterdayís play in the 1993 Suncorp Sunshine Coast Winter Carnival.
Sandercock and his sister Claire Paterson, Del Sandercock and Bob Peachey were locked 22-22 after 21 ends of the final against Reg Harch.
Harchís team of Mavis Harch, Marilyn and Ted Field held the advantage on the extra end with Peachey played the shot of the day to take out Harchís bowl and this enabled Snadercock to snatch the last minute win.
The final watched by a crowd of over 500 spectators saw Sandercock off to a 7-0 start but then a six to Harch on the sixth end reduced the lead to 10-9. Sandercock followed with four ends on the trot to lead 19-10 but the Buderim four slowly climbed back into the match to be square on the usual last end.
The Sandercock-Norrish final was also a cliffhanger with an extra end required to determine the winner. Norrish went into the last end needing two shots for a draw but things looked grim as the course to the jack was impeded by short bowls. Then Melbourne changed hands to trail jack for one shot and Norrish drew the second shot with his last bowl.
On the extra end, Sandercock held shot and chose to position his first howl at the back of the head among three opposition bowls. Norrish then trailed the jack with_his last bowl but the jack lodged next to the Sandercock positioned bowl giving the defending champions the match 18.17.
Buderimís Reg Harch triumphed against Bryan Campiís team of Jan Russo, Mary and Trevor Hingston 24-11 in a game perhaps won on one end. Campi had fought back from 1-8 down to be in the game at 6-10 but the Buderim skip played a telling shot to trail the jack for six shots for 16-6 and then won the next three ends.
The Suncorp Mixed Pairs begin today with games scheduled at all Sunshine Coast clubs. Last yearís winners Viv and Joyce Jacobs will not be defending the title but finalist, and a mixed pairs winner almost 20 years ago, Menice Murray and Gordon Schultz (Kingaroy) will be lining up at Mooloolaba - but not until Wednesday morning.
However a first round clash today at Mooloolaba could be a highlight of the day with Norma Massey and John Wolfinden pitted against Victorians Alison and John Duncan. Col and Shirley Bell and New Zealandís T and D Hll complete this tough section.
